A turbinate reduction is a type of minimally-invasive nasal surgery that is utilized to treat enlargement of the inferior, middle, or superior turbinates of the nose. When these areas of the nose become inflamed and enlarged it can result in difficulty breathing, a condition known as turbinate hypertrophy.

There are several methods by which a surgeon can reduce the size of the turbinate:

  • Turbinoplasty – The position of the turbinate may be changed to allow better breathing, though it may also be required to shave off some of the inflamed tissue.
  • Laser ablation/Radiofrequency – Using a thin probe, either radioenergy or laser light is utilized to reduce the size of the offending turbinate.
  • Endoscopic Mechanical Reduction – An endoscope is utilized to see the interior structures of the nostrils. A small incision in the turbinate lining and a surgical tool known as a microdebrider may be utilized to remove tissue.

A surgeon may elect to use a combination of these methods and others to perform a turbinate reduction depending on the needs of the patient.

This procedure can be performed on an outpatient procedure and often within the same day.

If you are suffering from turbinate hypertrophy, consult with a physician at Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center.
